Webcast Q and A

Getting the best performance from the IBM Informix API products
26 September 2002

Q: Will we be able to download/print the slides?
A: Yes, the slides will be available for download at
Q: Will the audio commentary be available as either a file or a textual transcript?
A: The audio will be available for replay until 25 October, 2002. The replay information is as follows:
Domestic: 1-888-203-1112
Passcode: 564791
Q: Why is the international audio is not free?
A: This is technical limitation. IIUG is researching other options.
Q: Setnet, dbping, etc. all work fine but MS data manager returns an error message about locale settings. Recently I've ignored this and everything works fine, despite the MS message. In the past, the quick fix was to quote the path (Win 98) in the autoexec file. Installation of the MDAC etc to make the data manager is something of a nightmare. Is there a recommended configuration and preparation for installs on an MS platform?
A: None of the developers on the call have enough familiarity with MS Data Manager to say offhand what the problem(s) related to locale settings may be. This question, dealing with configuration with a particular 3rd party application, is somewhat outside the context of API performance and it can be better answered by someone in Technical Support (1-800-274-8184).
Q: Any news about bug 155907?
A: This will be corrected in the upcoming Linux CSDK 2.81 release.
Q: When will Informix support native connectivity for .NET?
A: We are in the planning stage to offer the .NET Managed Provider for IDS. Stay tuned for more information in the post IDS 9.4 time frame. Client SDK 2.80 applications may use the Microsoft ODBC and OLE DB bridges to connect their .NET applications to IDS today.
Q: How do you convert the locale on an existing database, when you do not have the option to drop and recreate?
A: Unfortunately, you can't for the most part. The locale is set at the time that a database is created. If it can be determined that the DB_LOCALE and CLIENT_LOCALE are the same, except for characters outside your use, then you can avoid code set conversion by pretending the two locales are the same. In the case of en_us.819 and en_us.1252, this is a reasonably safe assumption. Tech support has a utility which can be used to convert a database of locale en_us.8859-1 to en_us.8859-15. The purpose of this utility is to convert (8859-1) databases to a locale that contains the Euro currency character (8859-15).
On a related note, on Windows, the Informix ODBC driver manager tab contains a check box "Use Server Database Locale". This feature tells the ODBC driver to return the data to the client application in the locale of the database and not to perform client side code set conversion. If used correctly, this setting may also be useful in reducing code set conversion overhead.
Q: I'd be interested in seeing examples using ADO or ADO.NET in a Microsoft development tool. Where can I find them?
A: CSDK 2.80 added a Visual Basic/ADO example showing usage of distributed transaction functionality with Microsoft Transaction Server. This can be found in the demo\oledbdemo\DistTxn directory. Additional examples are planned for CSDK 2.81. A .Net example will likely accompany the release containing the native .Net provider.
Q: For Win platform, please explain how to uninstall SDK if installing a newer, later version. I don't see any entry in the add/remove table, but know from experience that the previous install leaves entries in the registry.
A: There were some bugs in this area in the 1999 (SDK 2.20/2.30) timeframe, but there are none currently known. If there are other Informix products installed, the uninstall program may leave behind some entries that are potentially shared with the other products. If you are having problems with the latest product, please call IBM Informix Technical Support (1-800-274-8184).
Q: If you set locale for Windows clients on a database, could this slow performance on the Unix server like a batch run?
A: Yes, but it is a tradeoff that may be beneficial depending on usage mixture on the server. You would have to look at the usage of the server and try to make the performance best for whichever user group has priority.
The ODBC optimization, "Use Server Database Locale", that allows you to skip code set conversion, if you are confident that doing so will not adversely affect you, could also be done manually with any API on UNIX and Windows. Between en_us.819 and en_us.1252 the differences are outside the set of English alphanumeric characters.
Q: Does this code set conversion include using the Web DataBlade?
A: No, The Web Datablade does not perform code set conversion internally. It relies on the browser to perform any kind of conversion required to present the data. The Web Datablade is not created using one of the APIs discussed today, however.
