Hi,

when searching for a database system, which can hold multiple 100GB or some TB of data over the time,
you need to have a rock solid DB, which allows in-place upgrade to new versions, replication, for OLTP row locking,
different types of indexes, etc.
This is not the case for any open source product we evaluated (at least not completely). And when you started
with a product, it is not that easy to migrate. When a huge amount of data is involved, including special data types,
blob data etc., it might be a real big project to modify the DB system.
Postgres is going in the direction to be a system like that, but it is not complete.
But all "new technology" databases, mostly on open source, are not capable to handle all of these requirements.
That is why most of the companies choose well supported databases from IBM/Oracle/Microsoft etc.
These are all available in express/small editions which allow a cheap start and then (when you have the money) to
upgrade without big problems to a more scalable technology able to handle the amount of data you need.

So it is not always open source or nothing. I am also a fan of open source stuff. Using it widely throughout our
software setups. Projects like apache WS, JBoss AS, Tomcat, OTRS, Nagios, not to say anything about Linux are
very often used. I also like to contribute when we find bugs.
But when it comes to long living data, you would want to avoid nights and nights of copying data to new instances.
There are very many reasons why somebody would pay for a DB.
But, of course, it all depends what you are using the DB for. We are using also mysql DBs, but not for ~4000 parallel Users !

Marcus

open source is the future. go open source or leave

new startups need something easy to install, maintain and administer. and ibm
has poor history for this (db2)

facebook uses mysql and is already fairly mature. if they needed something
else they would be at the mercy of ibm or oracle needing to pay for
customizations even after upgrading to so called enterprise.

>If, on the other hand, I use Innovator-C from the start, all I have to
>do is pay IBM some money to get enterprise - no porting required

pay is keyword. i thought was supposed to be free? open source it or don't
bother. you arguments can also be made about unix vs linux. unix was closed
source but gnu/linux came along and has passed it. why because open source
lets more people contribute than closed source, new and fresh ideas.
