Is that I4GL 7.50 and ISQL 7.50? That's the latest version, at any rate.

I recently installed IDS, 4GL, and SQL in separate directories with symbolic

Unless you're planning to run radically different versions of ISQL and
I4GL, the tools can happily coexist in the same directory as each other.
You should only need at most 2 INFORMIXDIRs.

There are some reasons to keep the tools separate from IDS and CSDK. Some
recent changes in ESQL/C have inadvertantly affected compatibility, and one
way to avoid the problem is to keep ISQL/I4GL separate from IDS/CSDK. (Of
course, I4GL and ISQL use CSDK; but leave them using the version they were
built with, which may be different from the version that goes with the

In such circumstances, you will need two settings for $INFORMIXDIR. One
will be relevant when you're working with I4GL or ISQL, whether for
development or running production code. That setting will pick up the
material from the tools INFORMIXDIR. The other setting will be used when
you're administering the Informix server. It will pick up the programs
from the server's INFORMIXDIR.

You'd likely have INFORMIXSQLHOSTS set to the same file name for both so as
to be using the same connectivity.

For the most part, if you're working with ISQL and I4GL, you don't need the
Informix server utilities, and vice versa. Where you do need to run server
utilities while doing I4GL development work, I recommend creating an
environment-setting shell script in the tools directory that switches the
environment to the server environment and then runs the server program.

For example, assume that /opt/ibm/informix contains the server, and
/opt/ibm/i4gl contains the tools.

Then you might create a script /opt/ibm/i4gl/bin/dbaccess like this:

export INFORMIXDIR=/opt/ibm/informix

exec $INFORMIXDIR/bin/dbaccess "$@"

You can make a generic script to do the job by looking at $0:

export INFORMIXDIR=/opt/ibm/informix

exec $INFORMIXDIR/bin/$(basename $0 .sh) "$@"

If this script is called dbaccess (and stored in /opt/ibm/i4gl/bin), then
it will run the 'real' dbaccess in /opt/ibm/informix/bin. If this script
is called onstat, it will run onstat, etc.

You can create a parallel script for use in the server side, such that when
you're administering the server, you can run any program from the I4GL and
ISQL area in a similar way.

You can make the environment variable setting cleverer (to avoid paths
growing indefinitely, for example, or to validate what the program is, or
anything else that you deem necessary). You might need to worry about
setting $ONCONFIG for some of the server utilities; the I4GL and ISQL code
won't need it. But the basic idea is that you 'run the program' and it
runs with the correct environment set.

For major I4GL projects, I always used environment-setting scripts to run
all the programs. Amongst other things, doing that allowed a program to be
switched between p-code and c-code without affecting anyone trying to run
the program. So, I tend to assume that you'd have a similar mechanism in
place anyway for your I4GL programs.
