Hi,

I do not think there is a "correct" way to set up a Solaris 10 for
Informix. If you have a dedicated server for one instance, there is no
need to have multiple zones defined. We have some Solaris 10 machines
running very good without any zone definition (dedicated to one instance
of IDS).
If you have other things running on the same machine, you might have a
good reason to define zones and assign ressources.
If you are running multiple instances of IDS on that machine, there
might be a good reason to assign the ressources per instance (but you
could also run multiple instances without zones and use informix
parametes to limit resources access).
Of course, disc layout plays a mayor role in the setup of a new system.
Do you have a SAN, or mirrored local disks, maybe shared disks ?
But all this depends on your intended environment. So it is hard to say
which setup sou should choose.
I think, you should first define what you want to do with the machines.
Then look at the old machines and search for bottlenecks.
Version 7.31 to 10 is also a step which should be considered. In version
10, you can have bigger chunks, and things like update statistics are
different. There are many recommendations about this in this group, if
you search the archives.
I assume, you have more memory and more processor power in the new
machines, so it is normally necessary to tune some parameters
in comparison to the old setup. From sysadmin point of view, also
security might be a point to look at. How are users/groups identified
now ?
Is the server somewhere behind an application server or is it accessed
by some Windows machines directly and open to the LAN, maybe accessible
by WAN ?
If you think about zones, a non-global zone will always restrict IDS in
accessing the given ressources. This might be intended and ok, but could
also restrict the server to unwnated behaviour (noage and forced
residency do not work in a non-global zone e.g.)
I would setup an IDS instance always as dedicated server, but there are
many reasons depending on your environment to set up with zones and
resource assignment.

Marcus

Subject: Informix 10.0 FC4 & Solaris 10 [11400]

Hi all,

We are in the process of moving our database from the old 7.31 to 10 on
new Sun systems.

There seems to be some disagreement between our system admins and
informix DBAs concerning the correct configuration of the Solaris 10 OS.
Mainly zones, projects and resource management.

Are there any good sites out there that have examples of the correct way
to set up zones, projects and resource management for use with informix?

Thanks,
Sam
