27/Jun IIUG/IBM Webcast: WebSphere & IDS & 4GL - Synopsys & Replay Instructions

Posted By: Federico \(Fred\) Hubbard
Date: Monday, 30 June 2003, at 7:45 p.m.

Folks, as you probably recall, IIUG and IBM hosted a webcast titled
"IIUG/IBM Webcast: IDS/WebSphere Integration & I-4GL and WebSphere
Studio/EGL Roadmap Interlock" last Friday, 27 June. Pre-registration and
attendance were at record levels, demonstrating significant interest in how
WebSphere integrates with IDS, and how it is expected to accommodate 4GL.

Please find following my signature a synopsis of the event, kindly written
by IIUG co-founder and Informix-4GL expert Walt Hultgren. You may also
replay the event by visiting

IDS/WebSphere Integration and Informix-4GL/WebSphere/EGL Roadmap June 27,
2003

Hal Maner IIUG Board of Directors
Alexander Koerner Informix WebSphere Expert
Omkar Nimbalkar Product Manager, IBM Informix Marketing

This Webcast presented information on two distinct but related topics: the
use of IBM's WebSphere as a development, application server and portal
platform; and the planned integration of Informix-4GL into WebSphere
Studio's Enterprise Generation Language (EGL).

After a brief introduction on IIUG by Hal Maner, Alexander Koerner began by
presenting an overview of the WebSphere software platform, including a bit
of the history of Informix products such as Internet Foundation. From
there, he outlined the architectural relationship of the various components
of the WebSphere studio, application server and portal families.

Alexander's talk presented details on a number of IDS/WebSphere areas such
as J2EE, JSP, servlets, XML support, Web services, MQSeries, portal
services, and high availability environments. He pointed out that IDS is
now a Tier 1 database for all products of the WebSphere family, and that
future versions of IDS will offer additional features for WebSphere
support. He also announced the publication of the first IBM Informix
Redbook, _Using_Informix_Dynamic_Server_with_WebSphere_.

Next, Omkar Nimbalkar discussed plans for integrating Informix-4GL with
EGL. Also present were well know experts Jonathan Leffler and Shawn Moe.
Omkar presented the rationale behind the choice of this path as the future
direction for I4GL. He described the ways in which legacy I4GL green
screen text-based features will be preserved while adding capabilities that
I4GL developers have been requesting for years.

Omkar then outlined the phases in which the implementation will occur for
WebSphere 5.x and 6.0. He also showed a roadmap of significant milestones
covering the period beginning with the upcoming DM Conference in October
and extending to Q4'04. He then provided a technical summary that compared
I4GL and EGL, and what the migration strategy will be. Omkar wrapped up
his portion of the Webcast with a brief Q&A session that focused mainly on
licensing issues.

As you might suspect, this Webcast was heavy on substantive details. Even
with a longer than usual running length of 90 minutes, time was a bit
short. If I could offer any criticism, it would be that each of these
topics could easily fill a separate Webcast. However, on balance, I'd
rather have this timely information now with a bit less detail than to wait
for two full slots to open up in the Webcast schedule.

I would recommend viewing this archived Webcast to anyone interested in
either of these topics. For more information, see the Webcast corner of
the IIUG Web site, www.iiug.org.
