We have seen this with v9 on AIX 5.2

We set the env variable you mentioned but also set an aix kernel setting
MAXREQS (aix kernel) to 8192 from its default 4096.

IFMX_AIXKAIO_NUM_REQ we just set to 4096.

This solved it for us.

What gave us the clue was the following article
