Hi Tony,

You will need processors to get realistic results when stressing your
application.
You will need memory to handle the buffering/shared memory allocation of
your instance.
100 GB of data is a value which could be handled by an instance with about
4GB of memory with a relatively good performance.
If you have more than this, the better performance you might get.
I would instantiate the instance with 2-4 procs and set shared memory 1 GB,
Buffers 2 GB.
That leaves enough room for your other applications. In case you get a
problem, you could increase the values (lets say to 6 procs and more
memory). The values would differ depending on the type of operations you do
with the db (transactional things or more like reading and sorting).

# of users/developers = 15
1 informix instance
Db size approx. 100gb
New functionality (n-tier env) is the main target (Performance is not the
main concern at this time) Have 16GB memory (4Lpars) The box will be running
AIX 5.3, SAS, Websphere

Thank you.
Tony

Hi,

Informix would work on my laptop with a single CPU ...
What amount of users are you working with and what are the tasks you want to

do with it ?
What amount of data do you have to handle in your development environment ?
How many instances would you want to handle ?
It also depends on the memory amount you give the server/instance if you get

a performance problem.
I have seen running instances with 150 MB of memory per instance and some
with 6 GB of memory per instance (productive).
It always depends on the things you want to do.

E.g. we develop on a 2 Processor DB Server (Sparc CPU) on three parallel
instances with 5 developers. Performance is OK, cause we gave the instance
2GB of memory.

Could someone give me some advice on deciding on a minimum number of cpu's
for an informix instance in a development site.
For example, if I have a 16 cpu server with 4 LPARs, could Informix
initially operate using 4 or 6 cpus effectively assuming performance is not
the main concern.
