In Response To: Re: HP-UX PA-RISC/Itanium (Wiesiek Glod)

Please see Ron Macneil's post and my post in response earlier today where Ron
comments that HDR will not work for you.

Comments on the past problems you've had with IDS replication:

> - programmers and aplication errors/crashing HDR crashing

In the latest releases this is a rare problem. However, since you'll have to
use ER that's really not a problem.

> - very important reason spaces on disks: currently: 1TB + 1TB BC0 + space on
tapes
> - on HDR replication: 1TB + 1TB BC0 + 1TB HDR + space on tape

Yes any replication must suplicate the disk. On the other hand you double your
protection against drive/controller/array failure trashing all of your data. I
count the additional disk costs as minor compared to the potential for loss.

seconds, than split HDR replication, I must down ids , but I'm not sure ...

Even if you split the array and start up the instance on the backup machine
client users and applications still have to reconnect to the new server! If you
use server GROUP names for connection ids instead of servernames the group
failover to the backup is automatic on the reconnection request with no manual
changes needed. DBPATH is also supposed to work but there have been versions of
the Client iConnect where that was broken so I've come to trust the server
group mechanism developed for ER instead.

Thank you for response ...
Another reasons below ;-/

Yes is identical.

It's my opinion the same ;-|

Yes and NO, On this time We have implemented on all
machine external backup on XP array BC, this works
OK. This situation below:

- 3/day we blocks IDS
- pair XP volume
- split XP volume
- unblock IDS
- backing logs to tape

- on very danger operation on database
server we are doing BC and very simple
recover data if danger operation
ended badly ...

We implemented HDR past two years ago, and We
had a few problems:;

- programmers and aplication errors/crashing
HDR crashing
- very important reason spaces on disks:
currently: 1TB + 1TB BC0 + space on tapes
- on HDR replication:
1TB + 1TB BC0 + 1TB HDR + space on tape
- in my opinion simples split/pair XP arrary
users have break only a few seconds, than
split HDR replication, I must down ids , but
I'm not sure ...

If you have any experience and sugestions please
send me ...
