Re: OAT - Vantages? Useful for daily tasks? [700]

Hello Cesar.
OAT is priceless (and you get it for free). Having said this I do
understand most if not all your issues.

OAT is far from perfect, and perfection is a subjective measure... I'd like
to see some changes in it, but find it useful for a DBA daily job (which is
not exactly my situation).
I'll try to answer your questions below and I'll add a few remarks.

I think some OAT reports use the historical data. If they don't you have
the following options:
1- Wait for them
2- Write your own
3- Access the tables directly with any query/reporting tool (Excel?)

show/save some informations?

Like , logical log events...

The way what work today is very very very annoying and useless , If

Logical log backup complete , Logical log backup complete ...

I think there is (still) no way to keep "user preferences" in OAT. And that
would be very nice.
Without that option the only way would be to change OAT's code. It's easy,
but not what we would like/expect

I never noticed that some tasks are enabled by running others. If that
happens I agree with you.
I usually disable most of the tasks until customers understand how they
work and how to take advantage of them.

This can be a request for improvement.

A few more remarks... OAT is great if you know how to write your own tasks.
Around one year ago I was feeling just like you... And one costumer pressed
me to implement some consistent monitoring on their instances.
I've done it through OAT and putting aside some modesty it's one of the
best things I've done. The alarms are generated when they should, are "self
cleaning" if the situation is solved, appear on OAT's screen, send the
emails/SMS using the ALARMPROGRAM and there's no need to mess around with
crontab which they tend to avoid and also causes some issues in clustered
environments.

I believe you should look at OAT as a component for managing and monitoring
the instances. It's a great companion for the dbscheduler, the
alarmprogram, the SQL API etc.
I've blogged about this here:
http://informix-technology.blogspot.com/2010/08/oat-monitor-dbspace-usage-monitorizacao.html

You can use it as a task skeleton... I'd like to continue publishing other
articles about these tasks, but as usual, time is short.

Finally, please send your improvement suggestions to this forum. OAT is
being constantly improved, and it's open. That's one of it's greatest
features. We all can improve it. And writing a report is almost trivial.
Regards
